Entrance Assessment

The York School states that its entrance assessments are age appropriate and evaluate literacy and numeracy skills.

For Grades 7 and 9, York collaborates with Crescent School and Royal St. George's College. Applicants applying to one, two or all three schools need to complete only one shared assessment.

International and out-of-province applicants can complete the assessment virtually.

Admissions Process

The York School states that it develops an applicant profile using the interview, academic assessment, teacher reference and supporting documents such as report cards.

For Grades 7 and 9, application requirements include previous and current report cards, a one-on-one interview, academic assessment, teacher reference and participation in Taste of York.

For Junior Kindergarten, applicants participate in an Activity Morning and families complete an interview. A preschool reference is also requested.

Key Insights

JK, Grade 1, Grade 7 and Grade 9 are York's main entry years. The school notes that spaces in other grades are often limited.

Academic assessment is only one part of the applicant profile. York explicitly considers the interview, assessment, teacher reference and report cards together.

Grades 7 and 9 share an assessment with Crescent and RSGC. Students applying to several of these schools do not need to write separate tests for each.

The assessment is described in skills-based rather than curriculum-specific terms. York states that it evaluates literacy and numeracy but does not publish a detailed topic-by-topic syllabus on its admissions requirements page.
